“Did you learn that from Pinterest?”
Oh Pinterest…how I wish I had come up with the idea. From getting decorating ideas, learning a new craft project, or trying a new recipe, the ideas and possibilities are endless. I, myself, have tried several new recipes and taught myself how to make bottle cap jewelry and deco mesh wreaths from the pins. I’ve drove my husband crazy with each new project I’ve taken on…or talked about trying. I even sat him down one night and showed him every single one of my pins…..I’m sure he just loved me for that! LOL! By now most people know what Pinterest is and how to use it. But there is always those who either haven’t heard of it, haven’t tried it, or don’t understand how it works. This post is dedicated to a certain someone (who will remain nameless 🙂 ) and anyone else who needs a little help getting started. Back when Pinterest first began you needed an invitation by other users to join, it was kinda “secret society” of them. Thankfully Pinterest realized the demand of their site and did away with that. 🙂
Go to Pinterest.com and click on “Join.” You can either join through your Facebook or Twitter account, or you can create a new account by entering your email address. You will then create your username and password. Next check your email to get a confirmation link. Click the link to confirm your account, once it’s confirmed you’re in!
Ok now that you are in you need to create your boards. Go to the top right of the page where you name is and hover over your name, scroll down and click on boards. There you will see sample boards You can create as many boards as you want for each category that interests you. For example, you want to find new recipes so create a board and name it “Recipes” or “Good Eats.” If you are looking for decorating tips you could call it “Home Decor” or “My Dream Home.” If want vacation ideas then create a board called “Travel.” The boards you create is entirely up to you. You can also create “secret” boards, but I’ll save that for another post.
So now you have your boards created. Before you start pinning you need to follow people. One great thing about Pinterest is you can follow anyone from your Facebook friends to celebrities to businesses. Just about everyone is pinning these days, and those who aren’t will be eventually. So how do you find people? The easiest way is to follow your Facebook friends who are on Pinterest. Hover over your name again and this time click on “Find Friends.” Click on the blue “Find Friends From Facebook” button. A list will pull up and you can follow those you choose to. After you’re done click on “Pinterest” in the top middle of your screen to take you back to the homepage. This is where you will pin from.
Now it’s time to start pinning. This is the easy part. The homepage is where you will see all the pins from those who you’ve followed. When you find a pin you like and want to save hover over the top left of the picture, the word “Repin” will appear, click on it. Choose what board you want to add it to and click “Pin It.”
To view the pins source click on the pic, it will enlarge and from there click on the pick again. From there it will bring you to the website or blog for that pin. For example, if it’s a recipe you pinned the link will send you to the website that has the ingredients and instructions.
That’s it! You have your first repin! To view you pins hover over your name and click on “Pins.” You can now stockpile ideas and view them later when you are needing inspiration. I hope this was helpful in getting you started! 🙂
