What made me adopt the healthy lifestyle?
I have always had a passion for fitness, I just didn’t know what I was doing. I was the guy that would read muscle and fitness, cook the recipes and bring them to lunch with me every day. Soon I started gaining the pounds and in the wrong area.
I was killing myself in the gym and literally eating healthy every day. I trained 6 days a week and ate 5 small meals every day but something wasn’t adding up. I was up to a size 36 pants and I looked at my wife and said “I refuse to go to a size 38”. I also went to Mexico and saw my pics on the beach and was thinking what the heck…I look like that???
My wife was pregnant with my 4-year-old when I started to get serious about it. I started this by myself living in Houston, no support from anyone but my spouse, unhappy with my weight and knew it was time to make a change. I expressed to my wife I didn’t know what to do and she suggested I hire a coach. Her best friend from Buna had one and competed and she thought I should contact her, so I did. I hired my first coach. I never understood what I was doing wrong and after hiring my first coach I realized that nutrition is key! It was “all about the macros”. There is a right way to gain weight and a wrong way to gain weight. I was gaining the wrong kind of weight. When I took my body fat for my coach it was at 30% body fat. It took a couple of months to be back in a size 32 pants. When I started noticing changes, I would always take things to the next level with my training and have more focus on eating cleaner and better. Hitting those milestones helped in keeping your focus on the end result.
Men’s Physique started in the year 2011. It is a new division in the NPC and when it was announced people were calling me and telling me I should do it. I did it and qualified for nationals at my very first show. Most of the time that doesn’t happen, you have to pay your dues before you get to that next level but since I did so well, I decided to stay with it.
I have since had three coaches and now I am a coach myself. I have my license in sports nutrition. I truly enjoy studying nutrition and exercise science. I love being in the gym and being outside training and staying active. I have two small kids and they are also into fitness. I never once asked them to do anything related to it but they love it. I am an example and they pick it up and go with it. Anyone can do it. You have to get past the mental roadblocks that life has to be like this and that and if you are unhappy with yourself, change it!
I enjoy the educational aspect of helping others. Especially women. Women always inbox me and ask me questions and tell me they just want to get toned. For a person to tone, they HAVE to already have muscle. You can’t tone fat. You just can’t. To get the lean tone look, you HAVE to gain lean muscle and burn body fat simultaneously. The truth is muscle doesn’t make you look bulky. Fat on top of the muscle makes you look bulky. Muscle is long and lean. Fat is bulky and thick. So what I teach my clients or my goal is to help them do just that. Gain some lean muscle therefore they should train with weights whether that’s at the gym or their house that’s on them. And they need to eat clean and the right amount for their body and it has to be tailored to the individual.
I live this lifestyle because I am truly passionate about what I do as well as care for people. So if anyone has any questions feel free to look me up at www.facebook.com/delarosafit
